Photo - Silver Sheen Pittosporum (Pittosporum tenuifolium 'Silver Sheen')

This shrub is a terrific screening plant, rapidly
growing up to 10 feet tall x 3 feet wide.

  1. Hi, I want to grow tall shrubs (8'+) or small trees that can become a hedge as soon as possible. Between silver sheen and purple hopseed bush (Dodonaea viscosa 'Purpurea), which one grows faster? Can I plant two purple hopseed bushes only 2 feet apart? And another two feet apart with Brunfelsia australis (or Floribunda)? My goal is to make them grow above my 6 feet wall. Thanks! - from Southern California

  2. The Silver Sheen Pittosporum is the faster grower. I have also planted Hopseed Bushes close together to make a hedge. The Hopseed Bush is much wider so it depends on how much horizontal space you have.

  3. Thanks for your reply. I'm comparing Silver Sheen with Pittosporum tenuifolium 'Oliver Twist' and "Silver Star" for planting between a tristania conferta and an 8' palm. There's about 7 feet in between. We plan to keep the tristania from growing large. Reason for wanting to fill up the space between the trees is lack of privacy. I hope to have a fast screening plant. At least 8' tall. Oliver Twist looks more of a moderate size compared to silver sheen, but wonder about its growth rate and how much density it is. Thanks!!

  4. Hi again, sorry, I meant to also ask about Pittosporum tenuifolium 'Wrinkled Blue'. I'm somewhat familiar with silver sheen and silver magic, and would appreciate your opinions in terms of *growth rate* and *density* between silver sheen, wrinkled blue, oliver twist, and silver star, based on my previous message. Thanks again.

  6. Will silversheen grow in 1 ft deep soil? How many small bushes of them do I need for 45 ft of space?
